Sports beat: Trenton girls hoops advance to district title game

Tonight the top-seeded Trenton girls basketball team advanced to the Class 1A-District 6 championship game with a 63-32 win against No. 5 seed Hilliard.

Three players scored in double figures for the Lady Tigers. Samarie McHenry led the way with 16 points, followed by Jordan Douglas with 15, and Bri Becker with 13 points.

Trenton will play No 2 seed Branford, which defeated No. 3 seed Fort White 55-32 in the other semifinal, in tonight’s championship game. The tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Gainesville girls basketball season came to an end with a 65-57 loss to top seed Columbia (Lake City) in the 6A-District 2 semifinals. Na’Haviya Paxton scored a career-high 45 points for the Lady Tigers.

In boys basketball action, Gainesville rallied from a 19-point fourth quarter deficit to beat Newberry on the road, 75-73, in triple overtime.

After losing five in a row, GHS has now won two in a row, giving coach Kelly Beckham his 797th win.

The Hurricanes (9-10) host city rival Eastside (18-1) tonight at 7:30 p.m. You can listen to the game on 106.9 FM “I am Country” beginning with the pregame show at 7 p.m.

SOCCER – The Gainesville High girls soccer team advanced to the 5A-District 4 championship with a 7-0 win against Mainland (Daytona Beach) in the district semifinals on Thursday night. The Lady Hurricanes will play Seabreeze (Daytona Beach) for the district title on Friday night.

Elsewhere, Oak Hall (Gainesville) cruised past Hamilton County 9-0 and Lafayette (Mayo) shutout St. Francis Catholic Academy (Gainesville), 2-0, in the 2A-District 2 tournament.
