A Citrus Springs man was arrested on Dec. 6 for allegedly tampering with evidence and abuse of human remains following a murder/suicide in Chiefland.
According to a Levy County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) release posted Thursday, deputies arrested Gavin Selfridge, 23, of Citrus Springs, on Dec. 6.
The incident started on Dec. 5 when LCSO deputies responded to a 911 call to a Chiefland residence to the report of two individuals found dead inside. Selfridge called 911 after checking on the well-being of the occupants of the residence after not hearing from them for several days.
When deputies arrived, they found one male and one female dead in the home from what appeared to be gunshot wounds. LCSO detectives and CSI responded to the residence to investigate.
Information from on-scene interviews and evidence collected suggested that Selfridge, who discovered the bodies, contaminated the crime scene, which complicated the investigation. Detectives discovered two firearms had been used and the gunshot evidence suggested the deceased male and homeowner, identified as Robert Lee Carter, 58, shot and killed the female. Carter then shot and killed himself.
The investigation determined that multiple gunshot wounds were visible on Carter’s body with two different calibers. It was determined that the initial act was murder/suicide when Carter shot the female and then himself, but that, in anger, Selfridge used his own firearm and shot additional rounds into Carter’s remains.
Having contaminated and altered the original crime scene, along with mutilating human remains, Selfridge was arrested and charged with tampering with evidence and abuse of human remains. His bond was set at $250,000.
In the release, LCSO stated it extends condolences to both families affected by this tragedy.
