A dog attack critically injured a 71-year-old High Springs resident and injured its owner and a responding Alachua County Sheriff’s deputy on Saturday evening.
According to an Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) release, deputies responded around 7:07 p.m. to the report of a 71-year-old High Springs resident being attacked by a dog.
Upon arrival, the first deputy on scene saw the dog attacking the victim and attempted to remove the dog from the victim physically. The dog, which had already bitten its owner who tried to stop the attack, then turned on the deputy and started biting the deputy. The deputy shot the dog to stop the ongoing attack and the dog withdrew. The deputy then started rendering aid to the injured victim.
Multiple tourniquets were applied to the victim to control the significant blood loss and Alachua County Fire Rescue paramedics assumed medical and transported the victim to UF Health Shands Hospital Trauma Center.
As of Monday morning, the victim is reported in stable condition. According to the release, doctors at UF Health confirmed that the application of tourniquets by the responding ACSO deputies saved the victim’s life.
The dog involved in the incident died from the gunshot wound. Alachua County Animal Control also responded and took possession of the dog.
The injured deputy was treated at a local hospital and later released. The dog owner, who is the adult daughter of the victim, also sustained minor injuries during the incident.
