On Monday, Hawthrone Mayor Jacquelyn Randall announced her campaign for House District 21. That seat is currently occupied by state Rep. Yvonne Hayes Hinson, who announced that she would not seek her final term.
Over the weekend, Ocala’s Antione Fields also filed for the seat, further crowding the field with four Democratic Party hopefuls.
Malik Moore and Xavier Jarrod Monroe are the two other candidates for the seat, which covers eastern Alachua County and northwest Marion County.
Hinson has been the only Democrat on the Alachua County Legislative Delegation since she took office in 2020. No Republicans have yet filed to contest the seat.
But the contest for Seat 2 on the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) remains even more competitive after two new candidates join the four candidates included in the last roundup.
Incumbent Commissioner Marihelen Wheeler announced that she would step down after her first term.
Donna Bradbrook out of High Springs and Newberry’s Charlie Jackson, who also ran in 2022, both filed to join the race. Bradbrook and Jackson will run to earn the Democratic Party nomination along with three other candidates listed in our previous coverage.
Republican Roberty Woody is also contesting the seat.
Dewayne Baines, no party affiliation, has filed to oppose incumbent Commissioner Ken Cornell.
Gregory Pelham filed to run for District 3 on the School Board of Alachua County against incumbent Sarah Rockwell. That race narrowed to just two candidates after Pamela Marshall-Koons withdrew.
For the school board’s District 1, Janine Plavac is the only candidate signed up. She is currently the incumbent for District 5.
DeJeon Cain will oppose Gainesville Commissioner Casey Willits for District 3, comprising the city’s southwest region. Cain previously ran for the seat against Willits in 2022 and campaigned for a county commission seat in 2024.
