Multiple injuries reported when truck crashes into school bus on US Highway 301

A commercial truck driver was seriously injured and multiple children sustained minor injuries when a truck collided with an Alachua County school bus that was stopped to pick up students on NE US Highway 301 north of Hawthorne on Monday morning.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) release sent later Monday morning, a 27-year-old Silver Springs man was driving a commercial truck northbound at 7 a.m. and failed to stop for a school bus that had stopped to pick up children. The truck collided with the passenger side of the stopped school bus, being driven by a 73-year-old Gainesville man, from the rear and the driver lost control of the truck and it overturned on US 301 northbound.

FHP reported that a 10-year-old Gainesville boy, a 16-year-old Gainesville girl, and two 14-year-old Gainesville girls sustained minor injuries.

Emergency responders transported the Silver Springs man and the four Gainesville children to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville.

The crash caused northbound lanes on US Highway 301 to be temporarily shut down.
