Frazer School wins second straight MATHCOUNTS state championship

Four middle school students from The Frazer School finished in the top 17 at the MATHCOUNTS state championship.

Trailing at the end of the individual rounds, middle school students from The Frazer School came together in the team round, rallying from behind to win the school’s second straight MATHCOUNTS state championship on Saturday.

According to a Frazer School release, “MATHCOUNTS is a national program that provides students in grades sixth through eighth the opportunity to compete in live contests against and alongside their peers.”

This year, roughly 200 middle school teams across Florida competed in local chapter competitions, with 42 advancing to the state competition. School teams consisted of four students and one alternate.

Making up the first-place Frazer School team were Jason Zhang, Vivek Kolli, Isabella Mendoza and Jacob Paret.

According to the release, the top four individuals at the state competition move on to represent Team Florida at the national competition. The Frazer School team had four students who finished in the top 17. This included:

Zhang, first place. He is the third student from Alachua County to win the state competition, the release said. The other two were Jake Frazer (2017) and Eric Gao (2023).

Abby Guo, 10^th place.

Vivek Kolli, 12^th place.

Paret, 17^th place.

According to The Frazer School’s founder, Will Frazer, the team was losing to Orlando Science at the end of the individual rounds of sprint and target. During the team round, The Frazer School passed Orlando Science by scoring nine out of 10 questions correctly. No other team in the 42-team field scored higher than a six on the team round.

“We expected the competition to be very close,” Frazer said in the release. “Orlando Science had all four members of last year’s team returning. Some of our kids had an off day during the individual rounds, but they maintained their composure during the team round. This group is very mature and knows how to work well as a unit. Their ability to handle the team round has been a huge strength this year during practice.”

The 2026 RTX MATHCOUNTS National Competition will be held May 10-11 in Orlando.
