The Gainesville Housing Authority (GHA) was recently awarded $269,527 through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Resident Opportunity and Self-Sufficiency (ROSS) Service Coordinator Program, providing new resources to help residents access employment, education, health care and other support services.

According to a GHA press release, the grant will fund a full-time service coordinator who will work directly with residents living in six public housing communities: Eastwood Meadows, The Grove, Pine Meadows, Lake Terrace, Forest Pines and Caroline Manor.

The coordinator will help connect families with services focused on workforce development, educational opportunities, financial stability, health care access and digital literacy skills.

“This award is a meaningful investment in our residents and in the future of our community,” said Pamela Davis, chief executive officer of the Gainesville Housing Authority, in a press release. “It strengthens our ability to connect families with the resources they need to succeed and reinforces our commitment to expanding opportunities that lead to long-term economic mobility and stability.”

The ROSS program is designed to address barriers that often prevent families from achieving self-sufficiency, including transportation challenges, limited childcare options, financial hardship and lack of access to technology and training opportunities.

In addition to employment and educational support, the program will offer youth-focused programming and family support services intended to improve long-term outcomes for residents.

GHA plans to implement the initiative in partnership with local organizations throughout Alachua County that provide workforce training, educational services, financial counseling, health care resources and youth development programs.

The funding is part of a nationwide HUD initiative that provides grants to housing authorities and other organizations to support coordinated service delivery in public and assisted housing communities.

Serving Alachua County for more than 60 years, GHA provides affordable housing and supportive services to more than 2,500 residents each year. Officials said the new funding will strengthen existing efforts to create pathways to economic opportunity and improve the quality of life for families across the community.
