Area law enforcement captured a suspect who allegedly shot and killed a man in Gainesville Thursday morning and then led police on a high-speed pursuit that ended in Columbia County.

According to a Gainesville Police Department (GPD) release, multiple law enforcement agencies were involved in apprehending James Tate, who shot and killed a man around 4700 NW 16^th Place in the Suburban Heights neighborhood.

The incident started at 2:39 a.m. when GPD officers were dispatched to the location about a person who was shot. When officers arrived, they discovered a white male victim with multiple gunshot wounds.

GPD received information that the suspect was driving a silver Chevrolet work pickup truck. Officers located the pickup matching the information not far from the crime scene and attempted to conduct a vehicle stop.

The driver, later identified as Tate, refused to stop and fled at a high rate of speed, according to the release.

A pursuit ensued and involved units from the GPD, Alachua County Sheriff’s Office and Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

Tate eventually crashed in Columbia County and was taken into custody.
