A new bake shop opened in Newberry on Friday, and the line was backed up to the door before 8 a.m.

Main Street Sweets & Eats, 25345 W. Newberry Road, had stocked the display cases with a variety of donuts, cinnamon rolls, croissants, and other breakfast treats in preparation for the opening day crowd.

Main Street had a two-day soft opening earlier this month to gauge interest. The breakfast selections sold out in less than two hours on the first day. The next day, owner Frances Bradley and her staff were more prepared and managed to keep up with demand.

The bakery opens at 7 a.m. throughout the work week, so Bradley’s team of five or more is up and baking by 4 a.m. Bradley said she is excited to see the happy faces of people who walk into a bakery that “smells like heaven.”

During the soft opening, Bradley said a little girl came in and twirled on the checkered floor.

“This makes all this worthwhile,” Bradley said.

Bradley purchased the shop from the previous owner of Sugar, Refined, who was retiring. When Bradley took over and transformed the bakery into Main Street Sweets & Eats, she decided to broaden the shop’s horizons.

By offering coffee, lunch and ice cream in addition to baked goods, Bradley said she hopes to fill several niches in Newberry’s food and dessert options.

Jackie Robinson lives in Gilchrist County but works in Gainesville, and she said she plans to stop by Main Street every Friday to pick up a sweet treat for herself and a coworker.

“It’s just somewhere to come for something extra,” Robinson said. “Something just out of the ordinary.”
