Meltwich, the Canada-based restaurant chain “obsessed with cheese,” is opening a Gainesville location on West University Avenue.

The company, at 1404 W University Ave., Ste. 30 in between Cava and Huey Magoo’s, has not announced an opening date, but installed its sign outside and is renovating the inside of the dining room. Meltwich obtained permits to begin construction in February, according to signage on the door.

“We’ve dedicated our life to the celebration of cheese in all of its deliciously ooey-gooey forms!” the company says on its website. “You can count on us to be on the leading edge of cheesy creativity, fusing it with premium ingredients into our inventive and craveable comfort food.”

Established in 2015, the Canada-based restaurant chain boasts the motto, “In cheese we trust,” with a menu featuring a variety of grilled cheese melts, burgers, Philly cheesesteaks, sandwiches and bowls of gourmet French fries.

Meltwich meals are Halal certified and use Angus beef raised without antibiotics. They also offer non-sandwich options such as mac and cheese, milkshakes, and plant-based alternatives like vegan chicken strips.

The company planted its first American roots in Houston, Texas, in December 2024. Meltwich’s map of locations shows over a dozen scattered across the U.S., with Gainesville serving as one of four locations in Florida.

Halal beef? This is Florida, not Canada. Halal means that the animal was “harvested” in an extremely cruel, ritualistic manner.
