Neighborhood workshop will discuss rezoning West End Golf property

First step in converting 75 acres of greens into 487 residential units and a hotel: host a “neighborhood workshop.”

Notices to homeowners adjacent to the West End Golf course were sent out two weeks ago by JBrown Professional Group announcing the application to change the zoning of two recreational properties located at 12830 W Newberry Rd. to low-density residential (1 to 4 unit per acre).

According to the announcement, which was publicly advertised as required in local media, “The purpose of the Neighborhood Workshop is to inform neighboring property owners about the nature of the application and to seek comments.”

At the request of the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners Chair (BOCC) Robert Hutchinson, homeowners at The Villages of West End offered an alternative use of the property and asked the County to consider acquiring the properties to use as a Wild Space/Public Places investment and to create a health and wellness park that would promote getting healthy in the time of COVID-19.
