Rising oil prices are slowly being reflected at the gas pumps in Florida and nationwide.

According to Thursday’s AAA report, the average cost per gallon of gas rose two cents in the Gainesville area, four cents statewide and five cents across the U.S.

“Oil prices finally crested and have now settled above the $70 per barrel mark after weeks of hovering just below it,” said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson in a press release, “and gas demand is very robust. These two factors will cause drivers to see prices increase for now.”

Recent data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gas demand increased from 8.96 million barrels per day (b/d) to 9.15 million b/d last week. In the U.S., gasoline stocks decreased by 2.9 million barrels of crude oil (bbl) to 226.7 million bbl.

According to the AAA release, “Increased demand amid tighter supply has contributed to pushing pump prices higher. If demand continues to rise, pump prices will likely follow suit.”

Thursday’s national average of $3.48 is 13 cents more than a month ago but 75 cents less than a year ago.

In Gainesville, the average price per gallon increased to $3.45 from last week’s $3.43.  A month ago, the price was at $3.32 and last year the average cost per gallon was $4.21.
