Florida COVID-19 cases continue decline

Reported COVID-19 cases in Florida followed the national trend of declining this week.

According to Florida Department of Health data released Friday, the state recorded 132,622 new cases for the week of Jan. 28 to Feb. 3. That’s down from 198,319 the previous week and down from the omicron variant peak of 429,889 the week of Jan. 7.

The overall state vaccination rate average for 5 years old and up is now 74 percent with the 65 and older age group reaching 95 percent vaccination.

The state now has a new case positivity of 18 percent and 603.5 cases per 100,000.

According to the FDOH report, the current vaccination percentages for area counties are:

  • Alachua County – 70 percent
  • Union County – 54 percent
  • Levy County – 53 percent
  • Bradford County – 48 percent
  • Columbia County – 47 percent
  • Gilchrist County – 44 percent
  • Dixie County – 41 percent
  • Suwannee County – 41 percent

As cases decline, so does the vaccination rate in Florida. The FDOH reports 375,917 doses of COVID-19 vaccine were administered the week of Jan. 7, and that number dropped to 105,262 for the week of Jan. 28.

Alachua County numbers mirror the state with new cases, dropping this week to 2,330 and a positivity rate on the decline at 24 percent. Cases per 100,000 are at 854.3, down sharply from the peak of 2,392 per 100,000 last month.

The School Board of Alachua County reports 503 students and 81 staff cases over the past 10 days.

The Florida Hospital Association reports 7,744 confirmed COVID-19 hospitalizations on Feb. 4. The association stated on Twitter that today is the last daily hospitalization report it will issue.

“Due to the ongoing decrease in hospitalizations and new cases, FHA is discontinuing the daily COVID-19 dashboard social posts. FHA will continue to monitor the ever-evolving situation,” the FHA message reads.
