Butler Plaza Walmart shooting injures 1, suspect surrenders himself to police

A suspect surrendered to law enforcement after a shooting at the Butler Plaza Walmart in Gainesville injured a person on Wednesday night.

According to Gainesville Police Department (GPD) and Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) releases, the incident occurred around 10 p.m. at 2900 SW 42nd St.

GPD officers and ACSO deputies responded and secured the scene while providing medical care to the victim and evacuating customers and employees.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a verbal altercation between two men and a woman started outside the store but continued inside when the three entered the Walmart. It escalated into a physical altercation before the suspect produced a firearm and shot the victim.

The suspect fled the scene but reportedly turned himself in at the GPD headquarters lobby.

Alachua County Fire Rescue transported the victim to UF Health Shands Hospital. The victim is in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.
