A Chiefland woman was arrested after shooting and killing her roommate and injuring another woman on Thursday afternoon.
According to a Levy County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) press release, deputies from the LCSO Tactical Response Unit (TRU) arrested Kimberly Dawn Barba, 46, after responding to a call at 4:21 p.m. to the report of a shooting.
The incident occurred at 6650 NW 100 Ave. southwest of Chiefland. The witness who called the LCSO 911 Center said the shooter, Barba, was armed and had barricaded herself in a nearby barn, stating that she would shoot law enforcement when they arrived.
When deputies got to the scene, they saw what appeared to be a victim of the shooting slumped over in a truck.
LCSO detectives and TRU responded and removed the victim from the truck. She did not survive her injuries.
Law enforcement verified that Barba was barricaded inside a nearby barn and TRU members located her inside and took her into custody at 6:40 p.m.
An investigation led detectives to piece together that Barba and the victim lived on the property and were not related. The victim, accompanied by a family member, returned home from running errands when Barba approached the victim displaying a handgun. Barba made several statements to the victim and then opened fire.
The victim sought refuge in her truck after being shot while the family member ran. Barba pursued the fleeing family member and shot her in the elbow. Barba then returned to the truck and fired multiple shots at the victim before escaping to the barn.
Barbara was charged with a single count of premeditated murder and was booked into the Levy County Detention Center where she is being held with no bond. Additional charges are pending as the investigation continues.
