- DaMorie Lamontay Miles of Gainesville was sentenced to 46 months in federal prison for marijuana distribution and possessing an unregistered firearm.
- Miles' sentence will run consecutively to a state sentence for drug and weapon possession, and law enforcement seized over 600 grams of marijuana and a machine gun conversion device from his home.
DaMorie Lamontay Miles, 20, of Gainesville, was sentenced to 46 months in federal prison for possession with intent to distribute marijuana and receipt, possession, transfer or production of a firearm that was not registered in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.
John P. Heekin, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Florida, announced the sentence in a press release sent on Wednesday.
“This successful prosecution and sentence notches another win for the Department of Justice and continues to fulfill the promise made by President Donald J. Trump and Attorney General Todd Blanche that we will devote the full might of the federal government toward delivering safe, drug-free streets for our citizens,” said Heekin in the release.
According to court records, Miles communicated with others through text messages and social media to buy and sell marijuana and obtain a machine gun conversion device.
Miles was arrested after law enforcement searched his residence and discovered more than 600 grams of marijuana and the machine gun conversion device.
“Our goal is to make Gainesville a safer place, and that means keeping dangerous drugs and illegal firearms out of the hands of those who would use them to harm others,” said Gainesville Police Chief Nelson Moya in the release.
Miles’ federal sentence will run consecutively to a separate state sentence involving possession of a controlled substance without a prescription and possession of a weapon or ammunition by a Florida delinquent.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Gainesville Police Department investigated the case and Assistant U.S. Attorney Christie Utt prosecuted the case.
