Gainesville’s Devon Oliver, 18, received a two-year sentence in federal prison for possession of a firearm with a removed serial number following his arrest in the fall when trying to flee from police through an apartment complex.

United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida John Heekin announced the release and linked the sentence back to gang violence. The press release said Oliver was a documented member of a local gang and that the handgun had an extended, 22-round magazine.

Gainesville Police Chief Nelson Moya said a gun like that, no serial number and extended clip, is a direct threat to every citizen and officer who encounters it.

“We will have zero tolerance for violent offenders who arm themselves unlawfully, and we will continue working relentlessly to take these guns off our streets,” Moya said in the press release.

After serving the term, Oliver will go onto supervised release for three years, including home detention for six months.

“This successful prosecution is yet another win for the citizens of the Northern District of Florida, and a reassurance that my office remains committed to delivering the safe streets that they deserve,” Heekin said.
