Lake City charges teen for 12-year-old’s murder

The Lake City Police Department arrested and charged 14-year-old Jatarious Rashad Fluellen on Monday for the shooting death of 12-year-old Mariah Smith, according to an LCPD press release. 

Fluellen is facing charges for one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

LCPD officers responded to the report of a person shot at NW Long St. on Thursday night, where they found Smith suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers and EMS administered first aid, but Smith later died from her injuries.

Shots had been fired through the house, striking Smith while she was on the couch, police said. 

After following various leads, LCPD identified a suspect and arrested Fluellen. The department expects to make more arrests, according to the release. 

Officials ask that anyone with information regarding the incident call LCPD at (386) 752-4343 and request to speak to Investigator Sapp. 

Concerns over recent gun violence in Lake City finally Columbia High School to install metal detectors on Monday. Officials made that call after two armed teens attempted to hop fences into a football game on Friday, resulting in a change of venue for the last three quarters of the game, which had been suspended due to weather.

They wouldn’t be allowed.
