Lake City man arrested after shooting at homeless people near Vista Lab

Lake City police arrested a man on Tuesday who reportedly fired five shots into the ground near two homeless people outside Vista Lab on SW Baya Drive.

According to a Lake City Police Department (LCPD) release, officers responded at 1:25 p.m. on Tuesday to the area of Alachua Avenue and Bay Drive to the report of a male subject who discharged a firearm.

Upon arrival, officers located a man, later identified as 24-year-old Andrew D. Vanhyfte of Lake City, wearing red scrubs, who matched the description provided by callers. The suspect was seen leaving Vista Lab, located at 187 SW Baya Avenue, and entering a gray Nissan Altima. Offices blocked the vehicle from leaving the scene, and the suspect exited the vehicle with his arms raised and was immediately detained.

Witnesses reported the suspect approached two homeless people outside Vista Lab, pointed a handgun at them and then fired multiple shots toward the ground. Officers recovered five shell casings in the parking lot and found the handgun, a Smith & Wesson .22 Compact, in the suspect’s vehicle.

Vanhyfte was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, improper exhibition of a firearm and five counts of discharging a firearm in public. He was transported to the Columbia County Detention Center.
