LCPD identifies hammer suspect

Lake City Police identified a Welborn man who allegedly shattered a Columbia County Tax Collector’s office window and an employee’s car window with a hammer on Friday.

According to a Lake City Police Department (LCPD) release, officers responded at 12:44 p.m. to the Columbia County Tax Collector’s office at 135 NW Hernando St. to the report of damaged property.

When officers arrived, employees at the tax collector’s office said an unknown person walked up to the window of the building an threw a hammer, causing the window to shatter. Prior to this incident, the same suspect had used the same hammer to shatter the driver’s window of an employee’s car in the parking lot.

LCPD posted images of the suspect on social media asking for the public’s help identifying him. Anonymous tips led the suspect to be identified as Alexis Guzman Gomez, 24, of Welborn and a warrant was issued for Gomez’s arrest. He is being charged with two counts of criminal mischief and throwing a missile into a dwelling vehicle building or aircraft.

On Tuesday, Gomez was booked into the Suwannee County Detention Center on drug-related charges.
