A Levy County Sheriff’s deputy shot a driver Tuesday night after the man allegedly pointed a firearm at the deputy during a foot pursuit in Marion County.

According to a Levy County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) release, the incident began when the deputy conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle whose registered owner had an active felony warrant out of Pinellas County.

The driver initially stopped but fled after the deputy ordered him to exit the vehicle. The deputy pursued the vehicle into Marion County, where the driver stopped near the 23,200 block of West Highway 40 and fled on foot into a wooded area.

During the ensuing foot pursuit, the driver pointed a firearm at the deputy. The deputy then discharged their firearm, striking the driver.

The driver was transported to a hospital for treatment. No information was provided about the driver’s condition.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the deputy-involved shooting.
