Newberry shooting kills teenager

A Saturday night shooting in the area of 100 NW 253rd St. killed a Newberry High School (NHS) senior.

According to an Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) release, deputies arrived around 10 p.m. to the reports of a shooting and found an adult male suffering from a gunshot(s) wound.

On Monday, ACSO confirmed the identity of the victim as 18-year-old Jermaine Godbolt.

Alachua County Fire Rescue responders transported the victim to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

On Sunday afternoon, NHS Principal James Sheppard sent an email to NHS families that stated, “It is with great sadness that I must share a tragedy within our Panther Family as one of our 12th-grade students passed away this weekend.” 

Counselors will be made available at NHS on Monday for students who need support.

As of Monday morning, ACSO spokesperson Art Forgey said there is no new information the department is releasing at this time.
