A 69-year-old Old Town man was arrested Wednesday on a warrant related to a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred in October 2023.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) release, David Michael Coffey was taken into custody July 1 on an active warrant following the completion of a traffic homicide investigation into the crash, which resulted in the death of a 42-year-old Old Town man.
According to investigators, the crash occurred on the evening of Oct. 28, 2023, on NE 316th Avenue. Prior to the collision, the victim had been walking westbound in the westbound lane of the roadway after the utility terrain vehicle he had been operating became disabled because of a mechanical failure.
Investigators determined that Coffey was driving eastbound on NE 316th Avenue when his vehicle crossed the center line and entered the westbound lane. The left front of Coffey’s vehicle struck the pedestrian, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The release stated Coffey left the scene following the collision and returned to his residence. The vehicle believed to be involved in the crash was located the following day.
Following the investigation, a warrant was issued charging Coffey with a felony for leaving the scene of a crash involving death.
