Three juveniles were charged with inciting a riot and four were injured on Saturday afternoon at the Alachua Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Gainesville.
According to a Gainesville Police Department (GPD) release, multiple units responded to a disturbance at the detention center around 4:15 p.m.
The incident started when detention center staff entered a housing pod to address a juvenile who had threatened self-harm. When the pod door was opened, several juveniles fled and entered other areas of the facility, where the situation escalated into a riot.
Multiple windows were broken, fire extinguishers discharged, furniture damaged and water fountains forcibly removed from the walls, according to the release, with total damage estimated to be several thousand dollars.
Four juveniles were transported to UF Health Shands Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries sustained during the incident.
Three juveniles were charged with Inciting a Riot, Escape, Felony Criminal Mischief, and Preventing the Extinguishment of a Fire.
