A 14-year-old Santa Fe High School student was arrested Monday after allegedly making a comment about having a bomb in her backpack, prompting an investigation by school officials and law enforcement.

According to an Alachua Police Department (APD) release, the incident occurred around 9:15 a.m., when a guidance counselor stationed at the school’s front gate for morning duty overheard a student make the statement as the student entered campus.

Police said the student, identified as Amelia Tate-Wilson, told another student, “She doesn’t even know I have a bomb in my backpack” as they walked past the counselor. The counselor immediately reported the comment to school administration.

School officials removed Tate-Wilson from class and escorted her to the dean’s office, where she was questioned about the statement. According to police, Tate-Wilson admitted making the comment but said it was intended as a joke and that she did not possess any explosive device.

Authorities searched Tate-Wilson’s backpack and person and found no bomb, explosive device, or other contraband.

A second student who witnessed the exchange told investigators that the remark appeared to be a joke but said they warned Tate-Wilson against making such statements.

Police said Tate-Wilson’s guardian was notified of the incident. She was arrested and charged with making a false report concerning the planting of a bomb, explosive, or weapon of mass destruction, a felony under Florida law. School officials also suspended her from school.

Authorities emphasized that there is no active threat to Santa Fe High School.

In a statement, APD said it takes all threats involving schools seriously and warned that comments involving bombs, weapons, or violence can result in criminal charges even when no actual threat exists.

Police also encouraged parents and guardians to discuss with students the consequences of making threatening statements and the importance of reporting suspicious or concerning behavior.
