Law enforcement cleared a suspicious device found in a vehicle returned to the Enterprise Rent-A-Car in Lake City on Monday morning.
According to a Lake City Police Department (LCPD) release, officers responded to Enterprise Rent-A-Car, located at 129 Gwen Lake Ave., around 8 a.m. to the report of a suspicious device.
Upon arrival, officers talked with an employee who, during a morning vehicle inspection, found a suspicious device inside a vehicle that had been returned overnight.
The suspicious device was described as a piece of wood with a metal pipe attached by zip ties and blue tape and had been moved to the vehicle’s front passenger floorboard before the officers’ arrival.
A safety perimeter was established around the vehicle and a nearby daycare was evacuated. The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) Bomb Squad responded and, after an assessment, determined the device was safe.
No arrests have been made and the release reported that the investigation remains ongoing.
Anyone with information regarding this or any other crime is encouraged to contact the LCPD at 386-752-4343 or report information anonymously through the LCPD TIPS line at 386-719-2068 or Crime Stoppers of Columbia County at (386) 754-7099.
“The safety of our community is always our highest priority,” stated Lake City Police Chief Gerald Butler in the release. “I commend the quick actions of our officers, as well as the assistance from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office and Lake City Fire Department. Their cooperation ensured this situation was handled safely and effectively.”
