The Suwannee River Regional Library will be hosting a cold case event on Thursday evening featuring four unsolved homicides in the Suwanee Valley region.
Jason Futch of Suwannee Valley Unsolved and Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) investigators will give presentations from 6 to 8 p.m. at 1848 Ohio Avenue S. in Live Oak in the library meeting room, in a press release sent by Futch.
The presentations are as follows:
• Futch will be presenting the unsolved disappearance of Detra McGuire and the murder of her 2-year-old daughter, Roshanda McGuire, on Nov. 2, 1988. Never released information on the case will be revealed to the public.
• SCSO Sgt. Wayne Kelly and SCSO Investigator Chuck Thompkins will be presenting the cases of Johnny Eugene Parnell and Jill Carter. Parnell was found murdered on the side of Interstate 10 East on Dec. 9, 1989 in Suwannee County. Carter was found deceased by young adults walking to a convenience store in Live Oak on Aug. 28, 2001. Her cause of death is still undetermined.
• Laura Brotherton will be making a special presentation about her father’s death and how it impacted her family 51 years after his murder. Her father, Mark Hodge Brotherton, was murdered at the Standard Oil Service Station that he owned in Lake City on July 30, 1971. Another victim was shot but survived
A question-and-answer session will be held after each presentation so audience members can ask questions pertaining to these cases.
“I think that this will be a great opportunity to showcase these tragic unsolved cases because the important thing to remember is that these were real people and that they deserve justice, no matter how long their cases have been unsolved,” said Futch, creator of Suwannee Valley Unsolved, in the press release. “It is an honor to have been invited by the Suwannee River Regional Library and am pleased to have Sgt. Kelly and Investigator Thompkins to join me for this presentation.”
Individuals attending the event will be able to participate in a raffle drawing for a chance to win Cold Case Playing Cards that Project: Cold Case recently released to publicize Florida cold cases. Also, a Project: Cold Case Challenge Coin will be raffled. Both items were donated by Project: Cold Case for this event.
