U.S. Marshals capture Lake Butler fugitive

Law enforcement located and arrested Lake Butler murder fugitive Anthony Lydell George on Monday morning in Gainesville.

According to a Union County Sheriff’s Office (UCSO) release, the U.S. Marshal Service Fugitive Task Force captured George, 56, in Gainesville around 9 a.m.

The manhunt started on the night of March 19 when George allegedly shot three people in Lake Butler. One of the victims—Hope H. William Jr., 35, of Lake Butler—died from his injuries.

George fled the scene and the UCSO issued a warrant for his nationwide arrest and extradition with no bond, according to the release.

Alachua County Jail will book and process George before he is transferred back to Union County to face murder and attempted murder charges.

“Our agency has worked non-stop to see the apprehension on Anthony George and to bring justice to the victims,” said UCSO Sheriff Brad Whitehead in the release. “Our prayers continue to go out to the Hope family and victims involved in this tragic incident.  Thank you to the many hard-working law enforcement officers that assisted on this investigation and to all the citizens that provided information.”

UCSO credited the agencies that assisted in the manhunt including the U.S. Marshal Service Task Force, Bradford County Sheriff’s Office, Florida Highway Patrol, Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, Alachua County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Corrections-K-9 Unit, along with citizens that called in tips to help us located George, according to the release.
