A federal jury indicted a University of Florida psychiatrist on child pornography charges.

According to a Northern District of Florida U.S. Attorney’s Office press release sent Friday, Jesse Roger Armstrong, 35, of Gainesville, was indicted in federal court for one count of distribution of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. 

Armstrong will be arraigned at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 29, before U.S. Magistrate Judge Midori Lowry at the U.S. Courthouse in Gainesville. If convicted, Armstrong faces up to 40 years’ imprisonment.

Armstrong, who was employed by UF as a psychiatrist, was arrested on Feb. 26 on 10 child pornography charges and three animal cruelty charges.  

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations and Gainesville Police Department investigated the case, which is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Adam Hapner.

Armstrong’s case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse, according to the release.
