About 2,000 Alachua County fifth graders cut class on Thursday morning, instead taking buses with their principals and teachers to catch some sunshine and medals at Alachua County Public Schools’ 2025 5th Grade Fun Day.

With so many elementary school students flooding Citizens Field in Gainesville, a little chaos and confusion was no surprise.

The girls mile run finished after only three laps around the football field, and the boys race began with a lost shoe, though it lasted the full four laps. Both races ended with students gasping for breath and dumping water over their heads.

But the students’ spirits bounced back quickly as the sun heated the field and they threw themselves into the rest of the activities: relay races, bean bag tosses and tug of war.

The annual event is a celebration of the students’ completion of elementary school and is intended to promote the message that staying in shape can be fun. Students prepare for the event during their PE classes at school.

Students received participation ribbons, and those who earned top placement in events took home ribbons recognizing their achievement.

Beautiful. Makes this old man smile.

It would have been nice to see at least one picture of a school from the east side of town!

Ricardo

Exactly, especially being that there are more likely to win most of the competitions. That’s neither he nor there, but photo selection wasn’t diverse enough.
