The Frazer School’s Jimmy Jiang was named as one of the 20 finalists who will participate in the U.S. Chemistry Olympiad Study Camp in June.
Jiang, an 11th grader, has advanced to the camp for the third straight year and is one of only three students who have been selected after being picked the last two years. The camp will be held June 1-14 at the University of Maryland.
“Jimmy is the chemistry anchor for our nationally competitive Science Bowl team and his selection comes as no surprise to me,” said Marc Moody, the science team coach at Frazer School. “We are all pulling for him to make the team this year, but it is going to be difficult for him without having taken Organic Chemistry.”
The U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO) program is a multi-tiered chemistry competition for high school students, according to a Frazer School release. The American Chemical Society (ACS), a non-profit organization founded in 1876 and chartered by the U.S. Congress, has sponsored the program since 1984.
Twenty students are selected in the United States each year based on competition results. Based on their performance, four students will be chosen to represent the U.S. at the International Chemistry Olympiad.
“Jimmy, of his own volition, organized the chemistry club this year after school to help prepare the next generation of our chemists to succeed in his footsteps,” said David Buffkin, The Frazer School’s chemistry teacher.
