Interim University of Florida President Kent Fuchs has agreed to a one-month contract extension that will keep him in the role until Sept. 1.
Fuchs’ current contract was set to end July 31. UF spokesperson Steve Orlando told Mainstreet that UF intends to name a new interim president by Sept. 1. He said the university plans to launch a new presidential search “somewhere in the first quarter of 2026.”
Fuchs served as UF’s 12th president from 2015-2023, helping lead the university into the ranks of the nation’s best public universities. He assumed the role of interim president in August 2024 after the sudden resignation of President Ben Sasse.
In October 2024, UF announced a 14-person presidential search committee that would help identify candidates for the university’s 14th president.
That search process led to then-University of Michigan President Dr. Santa J. Ono being announced as the lone finalist for the position in May.
After unanimous support from the UF Board of Trustees, Ono was rejected in a 10-6 vote by the Florida Board of Governors in June.
