Oak Hall School and the Frazer School earned multiple first-place trophies this past weekend in Orlando during the U.S. Chess Federation’s SuperNationals VIII, drawing more than 4,600 student chess players.
Both Gainesville schools combined for five gold and one silver finish, helping Florida secure victories against other states.
Oak Hall tied with Lower Lab School, New York, for first place in the K-5 section, splitting a co-National Champions title. Aakash Jani led the way for the Eagles with six points. Sophie Li and Damian Alexander followed closely with five points each, and Addison Baumstark earned four points to secure the tie.
The Eagles also won the K-6 Under 1200 section and the K-3 Under 600 section.

Oak Hall’s K-1 team secured a silver finish in a field crowded with New York schools, with 10 of the 18 teams. Florida had good representation with three teams, including Queen of Peace Academy, who finished in a tie for sixth place.
The Eagles had talent to spare for the section, with seven players landing within scoring position. These included Hayden Webb, Suraj Jani, Levi Merkel, Tanner Samant, Melody Zeng, Harry Mclellan and Leon Wu.
Florida earned three other national titles through schools in Miami. The wins were in the K-12 Unrated, K-8 Unrated and K-6 Unrated sections.
In March, Gainesville schools (Oak Hall, Frazer School and Queen of Peace) dominated the 2025 Florida State Scholastic Chess Championships, winning seven of the eight sections.
Making Gainesville proud. Congratulations!
