The University of Florida announced Thursday that it will add early decision as an application option, starting with students seeking admission for fall 2027.

The binding option will allow students who are confident in UF as their first choice to apply as early as Aug. 1 and receive an admissions decision by Dec. 11, several months ahead of the university’s early action and regular decision, which were released in January and March of this year.

According to a UF press release, students admitted through early decision must commit to enrolling at the university and withdraw their applications from other schools.

UF said the decision to implement the early decision option comes after feedback from high school guidance counselors, students and families who have wanted the university to add the option.

“Through Early Decision, we hope to provide students who are passionate about attending the University of Florida with more selection flexibility,” said Mary Parker, UF’s vice president of Enrollment Management, in the release. “This will allow students to finish their senior year with their college plans finalized and give them more time to prepare for their future at UF.”

UF said the early decision option will also help the university remain competitive with peer flagship universities and “aspirational institutions” that already offer a similar admissions option to attract high-quality students.

The early decision application deadline is Oct. 15. If accepted, applicants will be required to submit a written commitment to enroll, signed by the student, a parent or guardian and high school counselor.

According to the release, UF will continue to provide early action and regular decision options, which are both non-binding, for prospective students who prefer greater flexibility. Application deadlines for early action and regular decisions will not be shifted by the addition of early decision.

Regardless of which application plan students choose, the release states that applicants will undergo “the same comprehensive review process that evaluates academic and nonacademic criteria.” Students applying through early decision will remain eligible for all available scholarships and financial aid.
