A Chiefland man died on Wednesday when his vehicle traveled off NW 70th Avenue, collided with a tree and caught fire.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) release, the 43-year-old driver was traveling north on NW 70th Avenue just north of NW 100th Street at a high rate of speed around 5:15 p.m. He started negotiating an “S” curve and first went to the right and then to the left.

When he attempted to drive around the left curve, his vehicle traveled northeast off the road where the front end hit a tree and the vehicle became engulfed in flames with the driver inside.
