An Alachua County School Board member says Florida’s governor, education commissioner and other officials have put an antisemite “on a pedestal” in an attack on the board.

“They’ve used Mr. [Jeremy] Clepper as their poster child,” school board member Tina Certain said in an interview with Mainstreet. “Dr. [Sarah] Rockwell is Jewish. He said some vile things about her.”

Clepper, a 36-year-old plumbing company owner, rose to public prominence after being at the center of a contentious school board meeting on July 31, when citizens lined up to comment on Chairperson Sarah Rockwell’s Facebook post deriding Hulk Hogan, the late pro-wrestler.

“Oh did Hulk die? I didn’t even know. Good. One less MAGA in the world,” Rockwell wrote in the since-deleted post.

Rockwell, who declined to comment for this story, apologized during the school board meeting.

“I made a highly inappropriate comment on my Facebook page, one that I deeply regret,” she said. “There is absolutely no excuse for what I said.”

Clepper twice spoke up at the board meeting before the public discussion period began and was told he would have to wait his turn. When his turn came, Clepper called Rockwell a “disgusting, vile human being” and called for her resignation.

“Rockwell, you cheered for the death of MAGA,” Clepper said from the speaker’s podium.  “You should step down.”

Clepper also disparaged others in his remarks, saying a Newberry activist who was convicted of child sex crimes should be “strung up” and “castrated.”

After his allotted time to speak, Clepper continued to call out to others in the audience.

Certain, filling in at the gavel for Rockwell, asked deputies to remove Clepper but quickly rescinded the request at the advice of the school board attorney. Clepper then left the meeting of his own accord.

He later posted on social media that he left because he felt intimidated by the board and the audience, some of whom were jeering him, shouting, “He’s a racist,” and “Get him out.”

Clepper said his right to free speech had been violated in the altercation, which made national news

Florida Commissioner of Education Anastasios Kamoutsas took notice, writing a letter that did not name Clepper but addressed the incident with Rockwell.

“After a parent expressed his protected opinion under the First Amendment, you sat idly by while the police were directed to escort this parent out of the school board meeting for expressing a conservative viewpoint,” Kamoutsas wrote in the letter, which he posted on X. “Because the board did not stop the First Amendment violation from occurring, all members should be held accountable for creating an environmental where citizens’ constitutional rights are under attack.”

“Accountability,” Gov. Ron DeSantis wrote on X as he reposted the Kamoutsas letter.

Clepper also reposted the letter, writing, “Amazing people are supporting me and getting this out there!”

“We have your back, brother,” Kamoutsas replied.

Photo by Gary Nelson Newberry Mayor Tim Marden, who is also the Alachua County GOP chair, attended a Florida State Board of Education hearing in St. Augustine on Aug. 20 and urged severe punishment for Alachua County School Board members.

The Florida State Board of Education, at its next meeting on Aug. 20, found unanimously that the School Board of Alachua County had violated parental speech rights. The panel ordered the local school members to undergo First Amendment training and warned of automatic sanctions – the loss of members’ salaries – to kick in should future violations occur.

Newberry Mayor Tim Marden, who is also the chair of the Alachua County Republican Party, addressed the state board and said it should inflict a more severe punishment, saying the local school board had created a “toxic” environment for conservative points of view.

At the meeting, Marden declined Mainstreet’s request for comment on his support for Clepper.

Certain told Mainstreet that Clepper’s claim that his speech was stifled is unfounded and that the support he’s received is misguided.

“We were accused of violating Mr. Clepper’s First Amendment rights. If you look at the video of the meeting, you will clearly see he was allowed to speak,” Certain said. “They have put him on a pedestal – in a position – that his behavior and history suggests is undeserved.”

According to public records, including police reports and court documents reviewed by Mainstreet, Clepper has been jailed for two offenses, including leaving the scene of an accident and reckless driving involving alcohol.

Clepper was adjudicated guilty of misdemeanors in five separate incidents, including for battery and several alcohol-related incidents in four counties. According to one arrest report, Clepper boasted that it “took ‘10 guys’ to hold him down at the bar.”

In an interview, Clepper said he doesn’t “handle authority” well but blamed “leftist, liberal police officers” and judges for his arrests and convictions.

“They like power,” he said. “I’m just offensive. You shouldn’t get arrested just for being offensive.”

Kamoutsas took a similar position, telling Mainstreet that Clepper’s background is irrelevant to whether he was treated unfairly in the school board meeting.

“In this scenario, he’s a victim,” Kamoutsas said. “We’re not going to not seek justice for someone simply because they have a court record.”

Kamoutsas ended the interview before Mainstreet could question him on Clepper’s social media posts that circulated online before Clepper removed them from public view. Those posts include antisemitic tropes, claiming “the world is controlled by Jews and Muslims,” and criticizing DeSantis for flying to Israel to sign hate crimes legislation.

In January, Clepper reposted a post from Rockwell in which she asked Christians not to celebrate Hanukkah.

“Hey you peasant goyims [non-Jews], mind your space!!” Clepper wrote sarcastically.

The Alachua County Democratic Executive Committee issued a statement condemning the education commissioner and the Republican Party “for continuing to defend an antisemite while attempting to silence and punish a Jewish elected official.”

Amy Trask, chairperson of legislative affairs for the Alachua County Democratic Executive Committee, said Kamoutsas had a “moral duty to make himself aware, to not lend the power of his office to support someone who professes bigoted beliefs.”

Meanwhile, Clepper continues to call for the resignation of Rockwell, who he said should be held to a higher standard.

“I’m just a plumber,” Clepper said. “She is over thousands of kids.”

She needs to be fired.

By the voters, yes.

GNV Ken

The chair needs to step down and that parent needs to apologize for his vicious words and tone. They were both in the wrong.

Why is “Rockwell (excused) in which she asked Christians not to celebrate Hanukkah”? Was that her personal social media or official capacity saying that? If the former, then why is his personal post history pertinent?
Finally, many people on both sides need educating about the difference between being anti-Semitic and anti-Israel/zionist. Mixing politics and religion (and atheism) is responsible for much bloodshed in history. Don’t they teach that Jesus separated “God and Caesar” and was crucified for saying that? Islamists do it too, worse than zionists.

My. Nelson’s article is thorough, informative, and concise. I have been confused, at times, about the timeline and sequence of events. Perhaps, due to lapses of civility these days, key ideas or issues get lost amidst the angry voices. I I feel better informed after reading Mr. Nelson’s article. My sense is that Ms Rockwell made a somewhat impulsive and serious mistake, but her public apology is sufficient. I hope we are able to re-establish civil discourse.

Kudos to Main St Daily News for publishing this revealing article. My perspective is that while Rockwell and Clepper both exercised their constitutional rights, they represent extreme opposite ends of the political spectrum. Rockwell demonstrated her extremism with her ugly comment on social media. Could it be that her apology was more expedient than heartfelt? Clepper seemed to have gotten the attention he was seeking through his disruptive outbursts during the meeting. Extremists’ rhetoric and actions exist to the detriment of the rest of us.

The issue isn’t the rightness or wrongness of the citizen’s speech, nor his background (all of which may be open to question) — the issue is simply that whenever the Government opens a public forum, the Government cannot discriminate on VIEWPOINT. The Government can set time, place and manner — but not VIEWPOINT.

The state board appeared to take note of flagrant VIEWPOINT discrimination by the SBAC and take remedial action. In our nation, there are many competing voices urging different stances, some of which I find useful and others highly disadvantageous to our nation — but the GOVERNMENT must allow freedom of speech for VIEWPOINTS (other than falsely crying fire in an auditorium). This is very settled law. Our leaders need to know, understand, and support freedom of speech and refuse to allow viewpoint discrimination in public fora. If they are unable to do so, they should be held accountable.

I agree she needs to be chastised and she should step down. On the other hand, he wasn’t shut down until he began to spew obnoxious language that disrupted communication.

Certainly, a warning would have been better than the rush to oust him.

In any event, parental frustration has reached a boiling point. Not sure how this will play out at the polls, as Alachua County voters who do turn out are often a handful of political loyalists.

Tough situation for parents who see change is clearly needed.

You are going to side with Marden–the man who went with the child predator to run a whole charter elementary school? The man whose city manager cannot be a part of the charter elementary school so was moved to city manager for the same reasons (cannot be around children). They are hypocrites at best. The whole of GOP are and people are allowed freedom of speech. Unless we’ve turned into a fascism military state now where only YOUR viewpoint is allowed–and since she made it as a personal comment off hand on her personal account. Not on any school board nor in any public forum nor anywhere near anything related to work it has nothing to do at all with the schools. The schools are all run as per state dictates. As for Clepper–in that one meeting he has said publicly, no less, very vile things. Publicly and on record to people. She treated him and everyone with the same respect. He did not. Right there is your difference. Put your big adult pants on and stop with the crap–there are actual problems that need to be addressed and Clepper is NOT one of them. He just wants attention for himself. That is all. Same for Marden.

Is the guy even actually a “parent”. I doubt it.

Thank you for publishing this factual accounting. The inclusion of direct quotes, or refusal of same, brings clarity to a story previously told in brief. Investigative journalism, such as this well written piece, is crucial to understanding. As Paul Harvey said, “Now you know the rest of the story”.

I find public apologies ridiculous. They often seem self-serving and disingenuous, and I never believe them. I think Rockwell should be removed from her position, not for what she may or may not believe, but because she has clearly lost the confidence of a large portion of the people she serves.

I agree with Kamoutsas that Clapper’s personal failings are irrelevant to how Rockwell conducted herself in this situation. While Clapper’s life may have its issues, they have no bearing on Rockwell’s actions.

Free Will

I doubt very many people knew Rockwell was Jewish until she brought it up in her continued effort to play the victim in this case.

Jsue Wagner

Seems obvious to my simple mind: It’s OK to lambast Rockwell (a Jewish woman) for exercising her first amendment rights but protect the rights of Clepper (a white male). What’s wrong with this picture?!!!

Free Will

One is an elected official who took an oath of office, the other one did not.

Thanks for publishing the details that the rest of the press did not dare address. The Florida MAGA movement insists on their free speech rights with no consequences for their speech or actions, but demands punishment for anyone with opposing points of view.

Also Real Gainesville Citizen and Voter

You believe it is a good that the sitting chair of the board of Alachua County Schools believes it is a good thing when Republicans die. Important to keep highlighting this hatred as much as possible.

A. Battel

So the local GOP wants to champion losers like this guy? Sorry is that sorry does.

GNVKen

I hope voters can accept a perspective that sees both Rockwell and Clepper were wrong. Slyly wishing death for political opponents, as did Rockwell, is as bad as posting tired but poisonous junk online and then behaving disruptively and rudely in a meeting. Were either of these people at their best when they posted or spoke out? Are they the best of our community?

Our children deserve higher standards and better role models than the ones currently basking in public attention. Because Rockwell is a member of the school board, she should be held to a higher standard than a crude audience member (who should teach by example and also apologize). Rockwell should step down as chair. Let the voters decide if she should be replaced next election.

Focus, parents, on improving the school district. Stop letting partisan hacks distract us!

Mr. Clepper ‘s background is irrelevant as the commissioner said. Tina Certain can say as many times as she wants that his first amendment rights were not violated but that doesn’t make it so. The toxic atmosphere from the board & audience & when Certain said for him to be removed is a clear violation.
Further, the antisemite statements from Certain have nothing to do with the situation at the board meeting. The topic was Rockwell’s hate for MAGA & celebrating one’s death! Al the other statements are diversion.
Rockwell should resign from SBAC board as she has caused such a spectacle. Tina Certain is not far behind her with the rhetoric.
Please, people, elect more suitable board members for these NON-partisan positions!

Real Gainesville Citizen and Voter

Thanks so much, Mr. Nelson. Very good investigative reporting on Mr. Clepper’s background.
P.S. I see that someone has appropriated my online ID, “Real Gainesville Citizen and Voter,” and I must say that his statement does not reflect my views.

Also Real Gainesville Citizen and Voter

There are thousands of other “Real Gainesville Citizens and Voters” – Why are comments being deleted in this thread? What is the violation in pointing out that it is the current, committed belief of the chair of the Alachua County School Board that it’s good when Republicans die? What is the violation in expressing an opinion that based on the chair’s performance in front of SBOE, that she still believes that to this day and only apologized under duress? It’s completely astonishing you would find it important to point out that you disagree with these statements. This proves exactly the point of how toxic the culture in this county is. Voices of dissent are being censored even in the comments of news articles.

Thank you Main Street News for publishing this in-depth article. Thanks also to Mr. Nelson for his excellent reporting.
