Gainesville Police Chief Nelson Moya was sworn into office on Thursday evening at City Hall, with a packed room of law enforcement representatives to lend their support.

Moya said he’s honored to accept the position and wants to see what the Gainesville Police Department (GPD) becomes. He said he hopes the department unites and creates its history together.

“My position will come and go,” Moya said. “I’m here for a snapshot in time before someone else takes the reins, and so what’s left is the organization.”

Moya served as assistant police chief before he was selected after a national search. City Manager Cynthia Curry and Mayor Harvey Ward have stated their support for Moya as he leads the department.
