Gainesville police arrest suspect for discharging firearm at a residence

Officers from the Gainesville Police Department were dispatched to the 2700 block of NE 11th Place on Wednesday at approximately 8:04 AM, in reference to reports of multiple shots fired.

After arriving to the scene, officers made contact with the reporting party and victim, whose home was struck three times by gunfire. A parked vehicle and telephone pole were also struck. 

Several shell casings from multiple weapons were found in the street. Nobody was hurt during the incident. No suspects have been identified.

On Wednesday, September 2, 2020, at approximately 10:12PM, a GPD officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle running a red light at the intersection of NW 8th Avenue and NW 34th Street. As the vehicle pulled to a stop, the passenger, George Strawder (DOB: 03/29/2001) opened the vehicle door and tossed an object out of the vehicle. After backup units arrived, the object was identified as a loaded handgun.

 Strawder was arrested for possession of a firearm by a convicted fellow and possession of cannabis of less than 20g. The driver of the vehicle was issued a citation for the red light violation.

These incidents continue the growing trend of shots fired, shootings, armed robberies, and other gun related events occurring in Gainesville and the surrounding area.
