Gainesville receives grant from AARP

The City of Gainesville Office of Strategic Initiatives has been awarded a $10,000 Community Challenge grant from AARP for its Online Civic Hackathon, “How do we create a social safety net to help make Gainesville a more livable community?” The Sept.12 event is designed to mobilize neighbors to collectively leverage their skills and talents to create a stronger community.

“We are proud that the city is one of only six recipients in the state and the only hackathon to receive an award this year,” said Jacqueline Stetson, director of Neighbor Centered Design. “We believe co-designing solutions with our neighbors and community partners is the strongest path forward. We are thankful for AARP’s support of our strategic programs that are based in strong community engagement.”

In its fourth year, AARP will award more than $2.4 million to 184 quick-action projects out of more than 2,800 submissions designed to help communities make immediate improvements and jump-start long-term progress for residents of all ages.

“We developed the AARP Community Challenge grant program in response to mayors, local leaders and residents who asked for help building momentum for more livable communities nationwide,” said Nancy LeaMond, AARP Executive Vice President and Chief Advocacy & Engagement Officer. “Many of our earlier grants have led to permanent changes, and the program continues to evolve,” she said.

The city’s Online Civic Hackathon is scheduled on the National Day of Civic Hacking, a nationwide day of action, Saturday, Sept. 12. Developers, designers, community builders, data scientists, journalists and all neighbors are invited to helpco-design a more livable community using a human-centered design approach, new technologies and Gainesville’s myGNV Resource Finder App. Sign up to participate in the upcoming hackathon through this link.
