The city of Gainesville’s finance director, Sue Wang, submitted her resignation and will leave her position on Dec. 1 after 16 months with the city.

The city announced the departure on Monday.

City Manager Cynthia Curry said in press release that the city sits in a far different position now than when Wang first started.

“Director Wang propelled us forward, bringing to the City many improvements in a very short period of time,” Curry said in a release. “She has left us in a good position, with a clear path forward and strong and reliable staff in place.”

Wang was hired as controller for general government in June 2022, but following a resignation, she quickly moved into the director position. The city had struggled up to that point to meet its audit requirements. Six months after her hire, Wang said the team had worked tirelessly to improve and that the 2023 audit was on track to finish on time.

In June, Wang announced the city finance department had finally finished its backlog of reports and audits.

“I have only one thing to say: We are caught up,” Wang said at the City Audit Committee meeting.

A state audit released in January 2022 noted a lack of finance experience within the city. Wang told the City Commission in October 2023 that she believes this issue has been resolved as well. She highlighted new personnel who’ve joined and increased training.

According to the release, Wang has begun preparing the finance department for a transition as Curry works on an interim plan until the city hires a new director.
