The second annual Strides for Sickle Cell Walk is slated for Saturday, Sept. 21, at Depot Park in Gainesville.
The event, which is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., will include local vendors and community partners. Event registration starts at 10 a.m.
UF Health’s Sickle Cell Disease Program recognizes that there needs to be a better awareness of the illness and the dissemination of community-based programs and resources for patients.
The net proceeds from the walk will primarily benefit Streetlight’s Sickle Cell Warriors, a program that supports patients ages 13 to 30 living with the disease.

What is Sickle cell disease?
According to the UF press release, “sickle cell disease refers to the inherited red blood cell disorders that affect more than 20 million people across the world, most common among African American and Hispanic American persons. Although one of the world’s most common genetic diseases, people with SCD experience lesser health outcomes compared to other diseases and have access to fewer health resources. The health disparities seen in relation with SCD push providers to discuss the need for better resources and assistance to patients from pediatric to adulthood.”
