This is entry level work responsible for maintaining water safety at the City’s aquatic facilities by
observing swimmers and taking appropriate action as necessary. Responsible for the operation and
maintenance of the swimming pool under the supervision of the designated Supervisor. Positions
allocated to this class report to a designated supervisor and work under close supervision. Work in this
class is distinguished from other classes by its lifeguard responsibilities of a temporary nature.
Job Description:
The City of Gainesville’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department is seeking a dynamic and

As a Lifeguard (Temporary Aquatics Ambassador) and/or Swim Instructor (Temporary Sr. Aquatics
Ambassador), you will be responsible for, but not limited to, maintaining water safety at the City’s aquatic
facilities by observing swimmers and taking appropriate action as necessary, the operation and
maintenance of the swimming pool under the supervision of the designated Supervisor. In addition, Swim
Instructors will teach American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim swimming courses.
To be considered for Lifeguard ($15.00/hr.) you must:
- Must be at least 16 years of age at time of appointment and
- Possess an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training certification or equivalent
- Have physical capability to pass the pre-employment Lifeguard swim test
- Must pass the Department of Children and Family Services background check upon hire and as
requested - American Red Cross certification (or equivalent) in Adult, Infant and Child Cardiopulmonary
Resuscitation (CPR), Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid is required upon hire.
To be considered for Swim Instructor ($15.50/hr.) you must: - Meet all the requirements of a Lifeguard and
- Possess an American Red Cross certification as a Water Safety Instructor or equivalent
