The Alachua County Crisis Center is seeking volunteers to serve as crisis line counselors and help provide support to community members experiencing a crisis.
According to an Alachua County release, the next volunteer training class begins Tuesday, Sept. 15. Following the initial session, training will continue for eight weeks on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., along with three four-hour sessions that can be scheduled flexibly around participants’ availability.
There is no fee for the training, and applicants do not need to have a specific degree or certification.
Training will cover active listening, crisis intervention and suicide prevention. Following completion of the training, volunteers are asked to commit to 24 four-hour shifts.
“Make a difference in your community at the Alachua County Crisis Center,” said Crisis Center Trainer Jerry Macdaid in the release. “Volunteering is an opportunity to impact the lives of fellow community members and gain life-enhancing communication skills.”
