CDS Family & Behavioral Health Services marked its 55th anniversary at a Thursday night celebration at 1908 Grand in Gainesville and also raised awareness for November as National Youth Homelessness Outreach, Prevention, and Education Month.

Formerly known as the Corner Drug Store, the nonprofit helps address the impacts of homelessness, food insecurity and drug abuse. CDS operates across 11 counties in North Central Florida.

During a speech, Ashleigh Switzer detailed her experience with CDS while growing up in Putnam County. She called the personal connection she formed with her case worker a true blessing and said it helped her development.

“These stories are unique, but not uncommon,” Switzer said.

Since 1975, CDS has helped 16,455 children through its Family Action Program and had more than 16,976 participants in its Interface Youth Program.

The organization’s programs and services have grown since 1970, including drug prevention, community counseling, short-term respite shelters and new mentorship programs.

CDS honored Glenn McInnes during the ceremony for his volunteer efforts. He said he was grateful for the opportunity to connect and touch lives.

“Where your heart lies, you give your time, your treasure, and your talent,” McInnes said. “It is an honor and an act of divine intervention that I get to contribute to this wonderful organization.”
