Countdown to Friday movie night begins

Regal Cinemas team leader John Caroline steadied his ladder as he placed the final foot-tall letters on the marquee at Regal Butler Town Center theaters on Thursday. Any sign of closure was erased with a listing of movies that will be on the big screens starting Friday.

Because the Butler Plaza location is set back from the road, Caroline said he was adding the letters to “make sure everyone passing by could see that they were open.”

Along with the Butler Plaza location, Regal at Celebration Point has also loaded the movie poster windows along its front with upcoming offerings.

“Regal is thrilled to welcome our guests back to movies!” reads the announcement on the Regal re-opening web page, where moviegoers can check which locations are up and running.

On May 14, the Regal Royal Park Stadium 16 is scheduled to light up the screens as well.

All three Regal movie theaters closed in March 2020, then re-opened in time for the Empire Strikes Back 40th anniversary in September. Then they went dark again in October 2020.

Last month Regal announced a slate of locations that would open on April 2, starting in Florida with locations in Orlando.

Now, it’s Gainesville’s turn to settle in with hot popcorn and a range of new flicks, including Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train, Mortal Kombat, Voyagers, Godzilla vs. Kong, The Girl Who Believes In Miracles, The Unholy, Nobody, Tom & Jerry, The Croods: A New Age, In The Earth, The Courier, and Chaos Walking.

The signs in front of the Regal Royal Park location that opens next month read, “We are reopening soon Gainesville. Can’t wait to have you back!”
