Mainstreet does not have a paywall, but pavement-pounding journalism is not free. Join your neighbors who make this vital work possible.

The one-gallon trees will ship to your home with instructions, and the trees should arrive in time for this year’s National Arbor Day on April 28. Customers can choose from dahoon holly, sweet bay magnolia, bald cypress and red or pink crape myrtle.

Duke Energy is financing the program with $50,000 and the Arbor Day Foundation will handle the purchasing and distribution.

“For years, Duke Energy Florida has teamed up with the Arbor Day Foundation in giving away nearly 11,000 free trees to customers and communities throughout the state,” said Melissa Seixas, Duke Energy Florida state president, in a press release. “To provide reliable service, it’s important we maintain trees and other vegetation along the lines that deliver electricity to our customers. By planting the right tree in the right place, you are assisting us in providing the safe, reliable service you depend on, while helping to keep the environment healthy and beautiful.”

You can place your order online once the giveaway opens online. If you enter your information ahead of time, you’ll be notified once it opens.
