The Matheson History Museum is partnering with the University of Florida Performing Arts Driveway Theatre Project to present “Fannie Lou Hamer’s America” on Saturday.
The free performance, starring Pamela D. Marshall-Koons, will run from 2 to 3 p.m. on the front porch of the Matheson House at 513 E. University Ave. in Gainesville.
This performance brings to life the experiences and struggles of a fearless Mississippi sharecropper-turned-human-rights-activist and celebrates the legacy of one of the Civil Rights Movement’s greatest leaders through public speeches, personal interviews, and powerful songs.
Marshall-Koons, a journalist, community activist, and executive director of The WELLness Network, brings a unique perspective to this role. She has made history as the first African American woman to hold leadership positions in several organizations, including the Greater Memphis Chamber of Commerce and the Shelby County Mayor’s office. She is also running for the office Alachua County Sheriff on the November ballot against incumbent Emery Gainey and Chad Scott.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs and blankets.
