Modern ham radio offers an expansive world of hobby electronics, global competitions and high-tech experimentation, and the Gainesville Amateur Radio Society is inviting the public to discover the possibilities during a free presentation on Saturday, Sept. 5, in downtown Gainesville.
The presentation will begin at noon at the Alachua County Headquarters Library (401 E. University Ave.).
Attendees will take an interactive look at the evolution of radio communications, tracing the history of radio from Guglielmo Marconi’s early discoveries and the technological advances of the Space Race in the 1950s to the advanced digital modes, satellite tracking and global internet-linked networks used by amateur radio operators today.
The event also will highlight the critical role ham radio operators can play during emergencies when severe storms and other disasters disrupt cell towers, internet infrastructure and local power grids. Presenters will share real-world accounts of how amateur radio operators provided critical communications when 911 lines went down during Hurricane Helene in North Carolina.
Participants will have an opportunity to meet local ham radio operators, talk with experienced operators about antenna building and learn about the tools used to test and optimize radio equipment.
The Gainesville Amateur Radio Society also will provide information about obtaining an amateur radio license and becoming part of the ham radio community.
