A Gainesville native recently received a leadership award while serving aboard the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima.

According to a U.S. Navy press release, Petty Officer 3rd Class Tyler Maini was recognized on April 6 for exemplifying the core value of learning.

The release stated, “USS Iwo Jima’s leadership recognizes sailors monthly for demonstrating superior dedication to the ship’s core values of learning, improvement, wellness, ownership, and safety.”

Maini, a 2019 Eastside High School graduate, has served in the Navy for three years and is an aviation boatswain’s mate.

“This shows that hard work pays off and being consistent pays off,” said Maini in the press release.

I’m not sure what it’s like in ‘today’s Navy’ but becoming an E4 aviation boatswain’s mate in only 3 years used to be quite a feat. Petty Officer Maini must be doing really well.
Congrats sailor! BZ (unless that’s too old a phrase these days)
