Student filmmakers from genCLEO will premiere a short documentary about Gainesville Regional Utilities and the fight for local control and energy democracy during a community event Friday, Oct. 16, at the Civic Media Center.

The event, which will run from 6 to 8 p.m., will be held in recognition of Florida Climate Week and is presented in partnership with the Sierra Club and the Civic Media Center. The film, “Power Grab: Who Gets to Keep the Lights On?” explores the history of efforts to keep GRU under local control and the broader movement for energy democracy in Alachua County.

Through storytelling, the 20-minute film highlights the voices and experiences of people who have been involved in the ongoing struggle over local energy governance.

Following the screening, attendees can participate in a question-and-answer session with the student filmmakers about their experience producing the documentary. The event will also include a community conversation about the future of energy democracy and energy justice in Alachua County, featuring long-time activists and community members, including people interviewed for the film.

Organizers say the event will provide an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of student filmmakers and longtime community members while connecting residents interested in the future of local energy policy.

Pizza, cookies, ice cream and other light refreshments will be provided.
